Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Last November 2004, we shared with you a plan to
establish a Health Complex at Campeche, one of many
shantytowns “bidonvilles” located on Morne l’Hopital. For
those of you who did not know, Morne l’Hopital is the
chain of hills that surrounds Port-au-Prince. Traditionally
the exclusive domain of the elite and the upper classes,
the hills have opened to the masses. Today, a succession
of shantytowns occupies Morne l’Hopital, these
communities do not abide by urban codes and are void of
sanitation, garbage disposal system, running water and
social services.
By December 2004, we had established a foundation and
formulated strategies to promote and provide health and
healthcare services to these localities.
In January 2005, we began executing our plans and
implementing our strategies. We hired two nurses and a
lab technician to assist Dr. Max Philippe and Dr. Simon
Tanisma. We networked with Orthopedists, Dentists and
Pediatricians to satisfy the health needs of the
population. By mid January 2005, our medical clinic,
medical laboratory and pharmacy were fully operational.
In February 2005, doctor visits reached 340 patients for
the month. Demands for pre-natal, baby delivery and
post-natal services are increasing. Demands for Dentistry
services are also on the rise. Our crew grew by five
additional members, a nurse in training, a housekeeper
and three security guards, all salaried staff.
For March 2005, we are moving to the second phase of
community health, Vaccination and Family Planning. This
second phase requires additional staffing, a nurse and
two health agents.
So far, all expenses have been financed by out of pocket
money and contributions from friends and family.
Today, we introduce our first newsletter to keep you
updated on our progress and to ask for your contribution.
Our strategy was to lay the foundations and become fully
operational before we turn to you for help. Today is our
time to ask for your help; today is your time to give to
support this endeavor.
Thank you.
